Review

Story
Viraj Shergill (Akshay Kumar) is a Hollywood stuntman who acts as a body double for Hollywood heroes. He is against marriage. Simrita Rai (Kareena Kapoor) is a medical student in LA who does modelling to support her studies. She has bad feelings about men, as her mother and sister endure failed marriages. Viraj’s friend Lucky (Aftab) gets married to Kamini (Amrita Arora), a friend of Simrita. Viraj and Simrita hit off on a wrong side. When Viraj takes a hit in a stunt, he is operated by Simrita. She accidentally forgets her
musical wrist watch in the stomach of Viraj. And it keeps singing every hour. The rest of the story is all about how Simrita recovers the watch from his stomach and how they fall in love against all odds.

Actors:
Akshay Kumar is absolutely fantastic and masculine in the role of a stunt man. His comedy timing is the best thing about his acting. Kareena Kapoor is sizzling in the
movie. Aftab Shivdasani did the role of Akshay’s sidekick. He put on a bit of weight. Javed Jaffery had another rib-tickling role of a guy who sees great fortune in every accident he meets with. I wish that his role would have been extended for more time. Sylvester Stallone did a guest role and like in a typical Hindi flick he rescues the ladies from the baddies of the neighbourhood. Denise Richards did the role of a Hollywood heroine who wants golden babies from Akshay Kumar. Boman Irani’s cameo is quite unattractive.

Technical departments:

Story - screenplay - direction: This film is a remake of Telugu/Tamil film Brahmachari/Pammal K Sambandham (Jeevi review here) that had Kamal Hassan and Simran in the lead roles. Brahmachari is a slapstick comedy that runs on comedy of errors. But the director made it loud and silly comedy in Hindi version. The film still works for its loud comedy had it not included the romance angle in the second half. The episodes of Askshay falling in love with Kareena and vice versa appear clichéd and out of place. The comedy in the film is so loud that there are so many swear words like bitch and bastard uttered multiple times. Screenplay of the movie goes haywire in the second half. Direction of the film is shabby though the director succeeded in getting a part of the comedy right.

Other technical departments: Music of the film is mediocre. Cinematography is of top-rate. Dialogues are funny. Editing is adequate. Art direction is of top-notch. Production values are grand.

Analysis: First half of the film is entertaining. Second half is somewhat boring. The movie is good in parts. Akshay Kumar adds a lot to this silly comedy with his terrific comedy timing. Kambakth Ishq is a kind of film that is silly and stupid. But still entertains you in parts because of the contributions from the actors like Akshay Kumar and Javed Jaffery. And don’t try to use your brain if you want to watch the movie.
